SUBLIMATION IN METAL | GICLÉE ON MATTE PAPER

After Giotto. Engraved by the Dalziel Brothers. Drawn by W. O. Williams.
Wood engraving on paper, 19th century.

This image represents “The Visitation”: the encounter between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth, both miraculously pregnant—with Jesus and John the Baptist, respectively. The central gesture of the two women clasping hands symbolizes shared joy and the spiritual connection between their unborn children.

Based on the original fresco by the Italian master Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267–1337), a pioneer of early Renaissance art, the composition reflects his distinct visual language: solid figures, architectural clarity, and restrained emotional expression.

This engraving was executed by the renowned Dalziel Brothers, leading wood engravers of the 19th century, after a drawing by W. O. Williams. Printed on paper, this work was part of a wider editorial project to make early Christian art accessible to a Victorian audience.

Style: Neo-medieval / Pre-Raphaelite
Theme: biblical iconography, sacred motherhood, female devotion.
